What is a Skin Lesion Excision?

A Skin Lesion Excision is a procedure that involves surgically removing abnormal growths on the skin. These growths, known as lesions, can vary in appearance and may include lumps, sores, and scaly patches. By performing this surgery, we aim to eliminate these irregularities and promote healthier skin.

Who needs a skin lesion excision?

After evaluation of skin lesions, Dr. Thosani can determine if lesion removal is necessary. Taking a collaborative, scientific approach to care, Dr. Thosani focuses on whole body health, not just your skin concern. That approach ensures you get the most well-rounded treatment plan for your skin issue.

During your visit, she reviews your medical and family history and your specific skin concerns. She then examines your skin, paying close attention to your lesion and looking for other abnormalities. She may recommend excision of your lesion if she suspects it’s cancerous.

Dr. Thosani also performs excision procedures on benign lesions and lipomas (benign fatty tumors that grow under the skin).

What happens during a skin lesion excision?

Dr. Thosani’s expertise enables her to employ a variation of techniques during the excision of lesions, each tailored to the specific type of growth you may have. Her careful consideration of your individual case ensures the most effective and suitable approach to address your needs. Dr. Thosani ensures that you will receive the highest standard of care during your treatment.

The following are various skin lesion excisionl options:

Shave Excision

If your lesion grows above the skin, Dr. Thosani may perform a shave excision, using a scalpel to remove the growth from the outermost layer.

Simple Scissor Excision

Dr. Thosani may perform a simple scissor excision for lesions that grow above the skin or in the upper layer of the skin. For this procedure, she uses forceps to lift the lesion and curved scissors to cut around it.

Skin Excision

A skin excision is a deeper cut that removes the lesion and some of the deeper layers of skin. Dr. Thosani may perform this excision procedure for skin cancer.

Curettage and Electrodesiccation

Curettage and electrodesiccation involves scooping out the lesion (curettage) and then burning (electrodesiccation) the area with a high-frequency electrical current.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy, a highly effective dermatological treatment, encompasses the process of freezing the targeted lesion, thereby aiding in its removal and promoting healthy skin regeneration.

Mohs Surgery

Dr. Thosani is a fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon. She performs Mohs surgery when treating certain skin cancers, removing one layer of skin at a time, and checking the margins until she reaches the cancer-free layer.
